~
Carvone is a naturally occuring chemical found in many essential oils with two enatiomers: R‐carvone and S‐carvone. The R‐carvone enatiomer is often found in air freshening products and has a sweet, minty smell. The S‐carvone enatiomer seen here has a spicy aroma. The two enatiomers having such drastically different smells is evidence that olfactory receptors can distinguish chiral groups.
