~
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disease affecting individuals from Sub‐Saharan Africa or of Sub‐Saharan African descent. In the United States one in 5000 individuals is affected. It is caused by a mutation in the gene for the beta subunit of hemoglobin that leads to an abnormal quaternary structure for hemoglobin. In SCD a long fiber is formed instead of the tetramer. These fibers produce abnormally shaped red blood cells, sickle shaped instead of the normal rounded disks. Sickled cells obstruct capillaries and impede proper blood flow causing the various symptoms of the disease.
