~<h5>Hemoglobin is composed of four subunits, two identical alpha subunits and two identical beta subunits. The binding of oxygen to one subunit enhances the bind of oxygen to the other subunits. Also, the release of oxygen from one subunit enhances the release of oxygen from the other subunits. A flat, square shaped molecule embedded in a groove or pocket of the protein is known as a heme group. There is also an iron atom at the center of the heme group. Oxygen binding, the key function of both of this protein, actually occurs at the iron atom. The protein creates a scaffolding for the heme group and other chemical functionality so that it performs its proper biological function. </h5>
