~
NSAIDs like aspirin act by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). One form of COX, COX‐1, is related mainly to the stomach mucous and kidney function effects. While desirable to develop a drug that inhibits COX‐2 without inhibiting COX‐1, it appears that inhibiting COX‐2 stimulates the production of a protein called tissue factor (TF) which initiates blood clotting which in turn can trigger heart attacks and strokes.
