~
Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. It is made via a condensation reaction between the hydroxyl of salicylic acid (a molecule containing an aromatic group, a carboxylic acid group and a hydroxyl group) and acetic acid. Extracts of willow bark were known to provide pain relief since the ancient Greeks. The active ingredient, salicylic acid, was isolated in the 1700’s. In the late 1800’s the derivative acetylsalicylic acid, which was gentler on the stomach, was synthesized by the Bayer company and marketed globally as Aspirin, which has now become the generic name for the substance. The molecular mechanism of aspirin action was not worked out until 1971.
